Hence begins the annual Father and Son fishing trip at Deer Horn Lodge. It's a 600 mile drive to the camp from my house in Newtown, CT
Just to get to the border with Canada it's a 4 to 5 hour drive. We usually stop in Plattsburgh, NY to get gas for the boat.
In Canada, you have to be 18 to buy beer, smokes and lottery tickets
We always try to stay at the Comfort Inn because next it is a great restaurant called La Cage aux Sports. Basically a sports bar with great beer and free popcorn.
Love the beer selection you get in Canada and this is at the quick mart where we were gassing up the car for the final leg to Deer Horn.
A 6% Tallboy of PBR fits the bill!
At the 364 KM marker on Rte 117 we turn off the paved road for 29 KM of rock road hell. The native inhabitants, the Algonquin Indians want to keep this area pristine and I don't blame them. Keeping this area undeveloped is what brings us here year after year.
Looks like the Deer Horn Lodge sign is missing. As I mentioned earlier, its only 29 KM to Deer Horn Lodge. The places mentioned above are all out of the Park, except for Kokomville. It appears that Kokomville is some sort of education center but in reality I think its just one of the Indigenous People's living compounds you see along the road.
The thought of driving 375 KM on this road makes me sick to my stomach.
My dad usually drives to Route 29, what we call the Rock Road, and then I drive the rest of the way in. Average speed on this route is anywhere between 10 to 15 mph. It's the longest part of the trip. After a trip down this road something always breaks on the boat or a screw or two comes loose.
Passing Lac Barriere, the road past the dam gets even worse but its only for a mile and then we arrive at Deer Horn.
